There are those occasions when you happen across a radio stations that's clearly not local. And if there is a Sporadic-E opening, it soon becomes apparent as the local station is wiped-out by stations from much further afield. On these occasions, it's fun to tune around the FM band and see what distant (DX) stations can be heard which can be done at home, or when on the move. It seems FM radios in cars are paricularly adept at receiving FMDX stations from amidst the background noise and mush.

Here's a list of the DX stations that have been recorded by Wireless Waffle over the years. The 'Location' column shows where reception took place (often on a motorway or at a service station or similar!) It just goes to show that in the right conditions you don't need fancy equipment or enormous antennas in order to enjoy the age old art of radio DXing. The 'RDS' column only shows the station's RDS name where it was successfully decoded - in other cases identifying the station was done using a different method (see below).

NOTES: The logbook has been filtered to remove records which are everyday occurances. For example, from the south coast of the UK, it is not unusual to receive stations from France which is, after all, only 30 miles (40 km) or so away in some places. Only examples where reception is out of the ordinary (i.e. stations which are not heard on an everyday basis) are shown. For example, the BBC Cymru transmitter on 96.8 MHz in Wenvoe, Wales can be heard across most of southern and south-east England daily even though it is over 100 miles (160 km) away: it is a 250 kW transmitter on an otherwise clear channel with no interference.

In addition, where the same station has been received from multiple locations, only the one which is furthest away from the transmitter site has been included. You may also see some stations listed twice: this is because on one occasion the RDS was received whereas on the other the distance involved may have been significantly further. In one or two occasions, the same station may have been received both by Tropospheric and Sporadic-E propagation (usually from different receiver sites).

Hovering your mouse over the distance column will reveal the equivalent signal strength (in dBm) that the transmitter in question would produce at the receiver assuming free space path loss.

Signal Strength versus Distance

In a previous article on Wireless Waffle the idea that the path loss for tropospheric and sporadic-E propagation might yield a pattern was discussed. In order to see whether this holds true, the image below shows, across the x-axis, the distance of each station from the receiver and the y-axis shows what the signal strength (in dBm) would be if that station had been received in free space would be. This takes account of the transmitter power, the distance to the transmitter and the frequency.

The hypothesis made in the article is that the path loss for signals received through tropospheric ducting were clustered around -40 dBm (n.b. with more logs available, this figure seems to be nearer -50 dBm), whereas those received via Sporadic-E are clustered around -65 dBm. As the same level of signal is needed to receive a signal (around -87 dBm for mono reception), this suggests that the path loss via Sporadic-E is actually 25 dB (n.b. now more like 15 dB) lower than that through tropospheric ducting. Take a look at the graph and see what you make of the results.

Number of Days Activity by Month

It is often cited that Sporadic-E propagation occurs primarily in the summer months, with occasional occurrances in the winter (in the Northern Hemisphere anyhow). To try and see whether this pattern occurs from the loggings here at Wireless Waffle, the chart below shows the number of days that each type of propagation has occurred in each month of the year. It does seem to support the summer/winter Sporadic-E seasons, and the fact that tropospheric propagation occurs fairly evenly accross the whole year (as no pattern can be seen).

Average Distance per Month

While interrogating the reception data, the question as to whether there was any difference across the year in the typical distance of Sporadic-E or Tropospheric propagation occured. The chart below shows the 'average distance per month' for each propagation method and each month.

Number of Logs by Frequency

Sporadic-E propagation usually begins at lower frequencies (circa 40 or 50 MHz) and slowly spreads upwards in frequency as the effect gets stronger. Tropospheric propagation on the other hand has a flatter frequency profile occuring relatively equally across all affected frequencies. The graph below divides up the FM band into blocks and counts the number of each type of propagation that occurs in each of these blocks.

A (cubic) line-of-best-fit has been added to try and compare the results. As the theory predicts, it appears that Sporadic-E propagation is far more common at lower frequencies than higher, and that tropospheric propagation is relatively evenly spread across the whole band.

Frequency versus Distance

To see if there is any correlation, the graph below charts the distance of a received signal against its frequency. This is to examine whether the higher frequency Sporadic-E openings lead to longer distances, or perhaps that when there are higher frequency openings, lower distances propagate further which would be reflected as higher frequencies having lower distances than lower frequencies. Equally it is to examine whether there is any correlation between frequency and distance for Tropospheric propagation.

A (linear) line-of-best-fit has been added to the chart which shows the trend and, as you can see, it is not completely conclusive for either mode of propagation.

Frequency versus Signal Strength

Another question is: is there any connection between the frequency in use and the signal strength received? One thing that should be borne in mind is that the propagation loss (based on a free space path) at 108 MHz is 1.8 dB higher than at 87.5 MHz. As such it would be expected that signals at the top of the band would be marginally weaker than those at the bottom of the band.

A (linear) line-of-best-fit has been added to the chart which shows the trend. Also, the difference in the best fit (effectively the average) value between 87.5 and 108 MHz is shown in the box in the corner for comparison. In theory, both these values should be close to 1.8 dB assuming all other things are equal (such as antenna gain and receiver sensitivity across the band).

One point to note is that there are virtually no cases where the signal strength for Sporadic-E reception exceeds the average of that for Tropospheric propagation. Equally, there are next to no cases where the signal strength for Tropospheric propagation appears lower than the average for Sporadic-E. This is probably just a quirk of the data, but is 'intriguing' as Mr. Data (of Star Trek: TNG fame) might suggest.

Distance versus Transmitter Power

In theory, the higher the power of the transmitting station, the further the signal will be able to propagate. The relationship between power and distance is best demonstrated if the range of powers and distances are presented on a logarithmic chart. The chart below shows the relationship between distance of the station (in km) and the transmitter power (in Watts).

For Tropospheric propagation there seems to be a stronger correlation between distance and power, whereas for Sporadic-E it is less distinct.

How do you know what station you're hearing?

Identifying 'DX' radio stations (especially ones in a foreign language and extraspecially whilst driving a car) is not necessarily that easy. However, the wonders of RDS have made life much more straightforward. If the station is strong enough for the RDS to appear (which assumes it is sending an RDS signal in the first place) then noting the frequency and the RDS station name is often sufficient to make a reasonable identification - the only problem that then arises is if there are multiple transmitters of that station on the same frequency (i.e. for a national network) in which case it's much more difficult. One option is to trawl the internet and see what stations other people with more sophisiticated equipment were hearing and see if you can match up your log with theirs.

If there's no RDS, but you hear a station ident or jingle and can catch the name, this is almost as good as the RDS. But in some cases (i.e. if it's in a language that you are completely unfamiliar with like Arabic or Turkish) you might not be able to tell the difference between a jingle and an advert or even make out the station name.

Another method, if several stations are audible, is to look and see if those stations could potentially come from the same (or a nearby) transmitter site, or are on a similar bearing from the receiver site. Often propagation occurs from similar locations and directions, so if there are multiple possible transmitter sites, but the other stations you have heard are from a specific location, then chances are that the one you are trying to identify is from a transmitter closest to those locations. FMScan can help with this. Say you can hear Fun Radio on 88.9, SkyRock on 92.7 and France Bleu Nord on 95.5, with a bit of digging you will discover that all three frequency and station combinations are broadcast from transmitters in and around the Boulogne area of France, and therefore it is highly likely that this is where all three transmissions are coming from.

As an example, France Musique has been logged on 89.4 from two transmitter sites, Boulogne and Brest. On the day that it was logged from Brest, other stations from the same transmitter site were also heard (e.g. France Bleu on 93.0). On the day that France Musique was logged from Boulogne, other stations fro the same site were heard (e.g. Europe 2 on 91.5, France Culture on 99.9 and France Inter on 103.3).

If all else fails, try and note the language and the frequency. Together with the list of other stations you heard, this might just be enough to make an identification. For example, RTA Chaîne 1 on 87.8 in the log above, was identified from listening to the programme and hearing the word 'Al Jaza'ir' (Algeria in Arabic) and a few smatterings of French (remember that the French colonised Algeria for 130 years and thus it's a language that's still spoken there) in amongst the otherwise incomprehensible (to a non speaker) Arabic clatter. From this information and the fact other stations from mid and western Spain were being heard, there's a fairly safe bet that it was from Algeria. A check on the web shows only one station in Algeria on 87.8 and so the identification is complete. Of course it could have been Morocco, but thankfully there were no stations on 87.8 in Morocco at the time (according to the web) and given the direction of other stations being received at the same time (i.e. the fact no Italian stations could be heard), it was very unlikely to be Tunisia. Another Arabic station on 88.4 was heard at the same time but there are two transmitters in Algeria on 88.4 and there is no way of knowing which it was that was being heard - so this logging can't be confirmed and doesn't appear above!
